## Failures (first-attempt 503s — all resolved on retry)

### Files 1, 2, 5 — Gemini 503 UNAVAILABLE

**What happened:** All three returned HTTP 502 from the Worker on first attempt, with upstream Gemini body:

**Worker response:** `{"error":"Gemini generateContent failed: 503 {...}"}` — HTTP 502

**Relevant error mapping:** `mapUpstreamStatus(503) → 502` (correct — D-13b, any non-429 upstream error maps to 502)

**Log events visible in wrangler tail:** `analyze.gemini_error` with `status: 502` — catch branch wired in Task 1 is firing correctly.

**Probable cause:** Transient Gemini model overload. Not a code issue — all three succeeded on the next manual retry within the same wrangler dev session.

**Mitigation considered (per D-14):** No automatic retry in v1. The 503s are transient infrastructure noise; the 6 test files all eventually succeeded. Per the plan's pass criterion ("if 5 of 6 pass but one fails with a clear documented reason… the phase still PASSES"), the final state is 6/6 green — PASS.

**Note for README (SHIP-02/SHIP-03):** Document that Gemini gemini-2.5-flash may return 503 under high demand. Worker correctly surfaces it as 502 with the upstream message. Callers should implement client-side retry with backoff for production use (tracked as deferred item in CONTEXT.md).

## Prompt quality observations (D-04 iteration policy)

5/6 clean on first pass (ignoring the transient 503s which are infrastructure, not prompt quality). File 5 has `body_type: null` which is correct per D-04 rule 4 (person was cropped/partial in frame). No prompt tightening required — first pass clean, shipping as-is.

### Notable Gemini behaviours

- **Rule 1 (focus person):** Correctly applied on all couple creatives. Files 2, 5, 6 each have two people; Gemini described only the in-focus subject.
- **Rule 3 (transcript language):** All transcripts are in English (the source material is English). No non-English speech detected in this batch.
- **Rule 4 (prefer null):** File 5 body_type=null — Gemini correctly returned null rather than guessing when the body was partially out of frame.
- **Ethnicity capitalisation:** Inconsistent across calls (e.g. "East Asian" vs "east asian", "Caucasian" vs "caucasian"). This is expected with `string | null` (no enum) in v1. Tightening to enum values is a post-launch task per D-08.

## Decisions captured for README

- All 6 creatives analysed end-to-end against `gemini-2.5-flash` ✓
- Transient 503s are a known Gemini model-overload pattern; client-side retry with backoff recommended for production
- Person field capitalisation is free-form in v1 (no enum); customer will supply canonical value set post-launch
- `body_type: null` on file 5 confirms D-04 rule 4 works correctly in the wild
- Transcript on file 2 (image) is `null` — ANL-04 image path confirmed
- Largest file (19.7 MB, file 4) processed successfully via Files API polling — no timeout within the 30s window
