# Phase 01: Code Review Report

**Reviewed:** 2026-05-20
**Depth:** standard
**Files Reviewed:** 19
**Status:** issues_found

## Summary

Overall the codebase is well-structured and follows the project constraints closely. The Worker/SPA boundary is clean, error mapping is thorough, and the PERSON_FIELDS single-source-of-truth pattern is correctly applied end-to-end. Security posture is good: the API key never appears in error messages, no unsafe HTML injection in React code, no raw upstream messages reaching the client.

One critical bug was found in the magic-bytes sniffer: it creates a 16-byte Uint8Array view on a buffer it only guarantees has 12 bytes, which throws a RangeError for 12-15 byte files. The remaining issues are: an empty-value hidden-input drop in the interstitial parser, a missing `aria-live` on the status region, a dead CSS sibling-selector, a wrong `lang` attribute, and a raw parse error message threaded into a GeminiError that reaches `wrangler tail` logs (acceptable but worth noting).

## Critical Issues

### CR-01: Uint8Array RangeError for files of 12-15 bytes

**File:** `src/drive.ts:143`

**Issue:** The guard `if (buffer.byteLength < 12) return null` allows buffers of 12-15 bytes through. The very next line creates `new Uint8Array(buffer, 0, 16)`. Per the TypedArray spec, if `byteOffset + length > buffer.byteLength` the constructor throws a `RangeError`. For any file whose byte count is in [12, 15], this exception is unhandled: it propagates up through `finalizeResponse` -> `downloadFromDrive` -> `handleAnalyze` -> `mapErrorToResponse`, arriving as an unexpected 500 response because the thrown value is not a `DriveError` or `GeminiError` instance.

Real-world impact: any file of 12-15 bytes crashes the pipeline instead of falling through to `application/octet-stream`. While Drive is unlikely to deliver such tiny files in practice, this is a correctness bug that would trip future unit tests constructing synthetic ArrayBuffers.

**Fix (preferred — match guard to view length):**
```typescript
// Change guard from <12 to <16 to match the view size
if (buffer.byteLength < 16) return null;
const v = new Uint8Array(buffer, 0, 16);
```

**Fix (alternative — clamp the view):**
```typescript
if (buffer.byteLength < 12) return null;
const viewLen = Math.min(16, buffer.byteLength);
const v = new Uint8Array(buffer, 0, viewLen);
// All existing probes read at most index 11, so clamping to viewLen is safe.
```

The second form is the most defensive because it never over-reads regardless of how the guard threshold changes in the future.

## Warnings

### WR-01: Empty-value hidden inputs silently dropped in interstitial parser

**File:** `src/drive.ts:80-84`

**Issue:** The hidden-input scraper uses the pattern `/value="([^"]+)"/i` which requires at least one character between the quotes (`[^"]+`). An input element with `value=""` — empty string — would return `undefined` from the match, causing `value !== undefined` to be false and the parameter to be silently dropped from the retry URL.

Drive's virus-scan confirmation form occasionally includes empty sentinel inputs. Dropping them causes the retry request to miss a required parameter, which results in Drive returning a non-binary HTML response — surfaced to the user as "Drive still returned HTML after confirm — file may not be public" even for fully public files.

**Fix:** Change the value regex to allow empty values:
```typescript
const value = tag.match(/value="([^"]*)"/i)?.[1]; // [^"]* allows empty string
if (name && value !== undefined) {
  url.searchParams.set(name, decodeEntities(value));
}
```

### WR-02: Relative form action URL throws uncaught TypeError

**File:** `src/drive.ts:79`

**Issue:** `new URL(decodeEntities(actionMatch[1]))` throws a `TypeError` ("Invalid URL") if the form action is a relative path (e.g., `/download?id=...`). While Google currently returns absolute action URLs, this is not guaranteed by any contract. The thrown TypeError is not a `DriveError`, so it bypasses `mapErrorToResponse`'s Drive-specific handling and surfaces as a generic 500.

**Fix:**
```typescript
let actionUrl: URL;
try {
  actionUrl = new URL(decodeEntities(actionMatch[1]));
} catch {
  // Resolve relative action URL against the Drive download base.
  actionUrl = new URL(
    decodeEntities(actionMatch[1]),
    'https://drive.usercontent.google.com',
  );
}
const url = actionUrl;
```

### WR-03: Polled file state cast without validation causes misleading 504 on malformed response

**File:** `src/gemini.ts:224`

**Issue:** `current = (await response.json()) as UploadedFile` is an unchecked cast. If the Files API returns a 200 with a body that omits the `state` field (which can happen during service degradations), `current.state` is `undefined`. Neither the `'ACTIVE'` nor the `'FAILED'` branches fire; the loop runs all 15 iterations and throws a 504 timeout error. The caller gets a "please try a smaller file" message when the actual problem is a broken upstream response.

**Fix:** Add a minimal state guard:
```typescript
const polled = (await response.json()) as Partial<UploadedFile>;
if (typeof polled.state !== 'string') {
  throw new GeminiError(
    `Files API poll returned response without state field at attempt ${attempt}`,
    502,
  );
}
current = polled as UploadedFile;
```

### WR-04: Status region has no aria-live — dynamic changes invisible to screen readers

**File:** `web/src/App.tsx:48-54`

**Issue:** The loading and error messages are rendered conditionally. When the user submits the form the status paragraph appears or disappears, but there is no `aria-live` region. Screen reader users will not hear "Analyzing creative..." or the error message because the DOM change is not announced.

**Fix:** Wrap the status output in a persistent `aria-live` container that stays in the DOM across state transitions:
```tsx
<div aria-live="polite" aria-atomic="true" className="status-region">
  {status.kind === 'loading' && (
    <p className="status is-loading">Analyzing creative...</p>
  )}
  {status.kind === 'error' && (
    <p className="status is-error">Error: {status.message}</p>
  )}
</div>
```
The container must be present in the initial render (even if empty) so the browser registers it as a live region before any content is inserted into it.

### WR-05: Raw JS engine parse error message embedded in GeminiError reaches wrangler tail logs

**File:** `src/gemini.ts:305-308`

**Issue:** When `JSON.parse(text)` fails, the native engine error message (which may contain a snippet of the raw Gemini response as context, e.g., `Unexpected token 'A', "API Error "... is not valid JSON"`) is embedded into the GeminiError:
```typescript
throw new GeminiError(
  `Gemini response was not valid JSON: ${parseErr instanceof Error ? parseErr.message : 'parse error'}`,
  502,
);
```
This `GeminiError.message` is then written to `wrangler tail` via `console.warn('analyze.gemini_error', { message: err.message })` in `index.ts:64`. The raw content does **not** reach the client (the friendly mapper intercepts it), but it circumvents the 500-char slice guard already applied to the raw text at line 304.

**Fix:** Drop the engine message from the thrown error since the raw text is already logged at line 304:
```typescript
throw new GeminiError('Gemini response was not valid JSON', 502);
```

## Info

### IN-01: Dead CSS adjacent-sibling selector

**File:** `web/src/styles.css:354`

**Issue:** The rule `.section-heading + .section-heading-wrap { margin-top: var(--space-6); }` targets an element with class `section-heading-wrap` that is an adjacent sibling of an element with class `section-heading`. In `App.tsx` the h2 with `section-heading` is the first child of a wrapper div, not a sibling of the `.section-heading-wrap` div. The `+` combinator never matches. The visual spacing between Person and Transcript sections is likely provided by other rules, but the intent of this rule is never fulfilled.

**Fix:** Either target the parent divs as siblings:
```css
.card > div + .section-heading-wrap {
  margin-top: var(--space-6);
}
```
Or add a class to the Person wrapper in `App.tsx`:
```tsx
<div className="section-person-wrap">...</div>
<div className="section-heading-wrap">...</div>
```
```css
.section-person-wrap + .section-heading-wrap { margin-top: var(--space-6); }
```

### IN-02: `lang="uk"` (Ukrainian) declared on an English-language page

**File:** `web/index.html:2`

**Issue:** `<html lang="uk">` declares the page language as Ukrainian. All visible text in the application is in English. Screen readers and search-engine crawlers will misidentify the page language.

**Fix:**
```html
<html lang="en">
```

### IN-03: `z.string().url()` accepts non-Drive URL schemes as valid input

**File:** `src/schema.ts:87`

**Issue:** `z.string().url()` passes `ftp://`, `data:`, and other schemes. These fail downstream at `extractFileId` with a 400 "Please paste a valid Google Drive share URL", so there is no functional breach. However, the Zod layer — which is the declared validation boundary — does not express the Drive-specific constraint. A hostname check here closes the gap between the validation message and the actual constraint, and adds a defense-in-depth layer:

```typescript
export const analyzeRequestSchema = z.object({
  url: z
    .string()
    .url()
    .refine(
      (u) => {
        try {
          const h = new URL(u).hostname;
          return h === 'drive.google.com' || h === 'drive.usercontent.google.com';
        } catch {
          return false;
        }
      },
      { message: 'URL must be a Google Drive share link.' },
    ),
});
```

### IN-04: ESLint and Prettier absent despite being listed as day-one conventions

**File:** `package.json`

**Issue:** The CLAUDE.md project instructions state "ESLint + Prettier from day 1, configured in root, inherited." Neither is present: no `.eslintrc*` / `eslint.config.*`, no `prettier.config.*`, no `eslint` or `prettier` entries in devDependencies, and no `lint` or `format` scripts. A customer auditing the public repo will notice the gap.

If linting is out of scope for this submission, the convention statement in CLAUDE.md should be updated. If it is in scope, add at minimum the devDependencies and scripts:
```json
"scripts": {
  "lint": "eslint src web/src --ext .ts,.tsx",
  "format": "prettier --write src web/src"
}
```
